Yes, killing the environment/ecology, and in most cases leading to war. Once this is recognised as an international crime, it will be possible to indict the individuals concerned and make them uncomfortable. My recent tirade against the destruction of Australia's water through the mixing of pollutants from coal seam gas would fit very neatly as ecocide.
To get away from Ecocide, try Mega Planning.

There's money in destruction ...

There's money in destruction. Don't miss out!

If you are prepared to pollute Australia's groundwater by pumping chemicals into it, you can force out the coal seam gas and flog it. You can make a lot of money! Mind you, there will be a lot of children with leukemia, maybe your own, we will no longer be able to drink the water that has sustained the nation and it's Aboriginal owners for all time, but does it matter if we can make money? After all, we can drink bottled water, or filtered water, or grog, can't we? We can even sell that! There's money in that too. There's nothing that can't be sold, is there?

Now if you're one of those people that doesn't want our water supply polluted and our children dying of leukemia, then you may have to stand up and say loudly, "No!" because otherwise, this is happening, day by day.

So if you'd like to have clean water and healthy children, why not take a look at this short video
http://www.getup.org.au/campaigns/coal-seam-gas/csg-ad/dont-risk-csg
of what happens on farms when holes are drilled and this destructive process (which we give the jovial name of 'fracking') begins. Note that the farmers can't stop this, they have no power. The politicians won't give them the power, the petroleum industry has the right to walk onto to their land, breaking into the farm if necessary, without even warning, and start up this process of heavy pollution. Yes, please take a look, and add your voice to the resistance against this wilful and very profitable destruction of Australia's water. We better act fast, or our land will be devastated while we look on.

The Great Artesian Basin is being attacked. YOU CANNOT IMAGINE THE SCALE OF IT UNTIL YOU SEE THIS VIDEO.

A representative of the Petroleum Gas industry, on Radio National, palming off the destruction, actually said, "Oh in Sydney, we may not have to use fracking". No? They'll pollute our suburbs by mixing coal seam gas with groundwater but maybe not using fracking! Maybe. So it'll be OK.

Read this from GetUp:

Every week Tony wakes at dawn to make his regular rounds. There are already 66 wells in the Piliga State forest near his farm, and over 1,000 more are planned. It's supposed to be a conservation reserve.

He follows the pipes, looking for leaks, and often finds them. He takes photos of the unsealed ponds where mining companies store waste water from extraction, and of the trees dying off nearby. He's right to be concerned. Analysis of waste in other areas found hundreds of industrial chemicals, and carcinogens linked to leukaemia at levels 6 to 15 times safe drinking water standards1.

Undeterred, coal seam gas companies don't want anything to slow, nor regulate, their rapid expansion. So this week they launched a new PR campaign to convince the community and the Government there is nothing to worry about.

If the industry hasn't moved into your area yet, watch this video featuring Tony and other locals, to see why coal seam gas is the next big threat to our land and water:

http://www.getup.org.au/campaigns/coal-seam-gas/csg-ad/dont-risk-csg

A widely held view

There seems to be a widely held view that Corporate Social Responsibility (or CSR) is about sacrificing earnings in order to be 'a good corporate citizen'.

There is another view that ought to be heard more: it's about how organisations can thrive in a rapidly changing world. How far are we prepared to look into the future to guarantee our profits long-term?

It’s a fact of life that new restrictions are continuously placed on organisations, whether by obligations to the workforce or to society or the environment. We have the choice of seeing these as obstacles or as opportunities. As obstacles, we try to get around them or postpone them - until eventually we get hit by some new law - like a price on carbon (oh dear, we thought we could keep dumping the carbon down the sky drain!)

As opportunities, we can involve our whole workforce, our clients, our suppliers, all of our stakeholders in how to have less impact on the ecology - and achieve a new round of profitability.

That's Mega Planning. Start from the future you want (it will surely include no-pollution, won't it?) and plan to operate that way in the shortest time possible. Once the decision is made, the effort to fight off the needs of the future is eliminated and you are free to put your creative energy into new ways, more profitable ways, to change.

Any feedback on this?

More for Less

Besides our 360 Facilitated® Leader/Manager Survey™ being the unique 360 survey on the Web, it actually combines three profiles in one. In addition to the holistic, research-based Leader/Manager framework covering the full range of your behaviours, there are the [optional] Emotional Intelligence Behaviours pages with the 'traffic light' warning of where problems may lie. Managers really love that quick check on the EI implications of how they work with others.

And then there is the Leader/Manager Types™ profile, the quick self-scoring instrument that checks for Eight Types of Manager and gives you immediate feedback on how you may be relating to others - and what you might do about it.

So, three profiles in one, the value is high and the price is low.

Add in the 130-page Leader/Manager Guide (dynamic, online) with Professional Development Plan, and then telephone and email support, also the Accreditation packages to ensure that consultants and facilitators do the best job they can, and you do really have More for Less.

Remember also, that any Capability or Competency set can be mapped onto the Leader/Manager Model, creating a double profile at minimal cost, and you have something very powerful and quite special. The 360 Leader/Manager Surveys™ are loved for the way they encourage managers and their teams to get together and deal with the issues confronting them. But these questionnaires don't necessarily cover the interests of clients, especially external. Usually, the manager doesn't meet regularly with them. Many of the things managers do just don't apply. How then do we get their view as part of the 360 degree feedback?

To get the customer's view, we add on to the L/M questionnaire some more questions - perhaps 10, perhaps more - that capture the essence of what the customer wants. Now we have a full picture of manager and team working together - and supporting their mutual customers!

For many managers, this is a very useful extension of the Leader/Manager Model™

Contact us if you would like more details.

Can't we stop the bloodshed in Egypt?

With the arrest of journalists and Amnesty International personnel, Egypt appears poised for another Tiananmen massacre while the rest of us stand by. The news, of course, concentrates on the devastation and and great rescue effort - and all power to them for keeping us informed. But how did we let this happen? Please let's start to think ahead.

As usual, there are the sceptics desperately trying to deny that we are seeing Global Warming in action. A really nice short article that clarifies this for anyone (other than a 'sceptic') from University of California at San Diego shows how climate warming puts more water into the system. Well worth reading at:
Proof of Global Warming

A little more support and detail from University of New South Wales is at: Climate change link

The other issues behind this are around our risk-taking behaviour (motivated by financial gain) and our unwillingness to realise that '100-year' weather events must now be expected more frequently. That's Global Warming again.

Risk-taking: we build housing on flood plains where it's only a matter of how soon, how much. And we deforest the surrounding hills so that the majority of rainfall now becomes run-off - which becomes flooding.

The solution: it's very long-term, hence not popular with politicians of the populist variety. We need education. Help people to understand, then they will elect politicians who dare to tackle the problem.

It's complex. We have created an economic system that keeps expanding to infinity - well not quite. You could say the bubble grows till it pops, over and over. And we are dependent on its growth for livelihood and well-being. It's Catch 22, no one offers a solution...

Except Mega Planning. Everything becomes possible once you factor in the future. Start everything you do from a Vision of the future. It's not hard to plan this way. It doesn't negate the planning you've been doing, but it give you a framework to evaluate it and find a better way forward. And it doesn't cost much - a lot of the material is open-source.

People are gradually wiseing up and asking for this forward-looking approach. Get in ahead with Mega Planning and lead the way. Especially in the re-building phase in Queensland. Let's not build the whole catastrophe over again and wait for it to happen! Because it won't be 100 years. Much less.

Wishing you the very best of all possible futures
[more]

Getting better

Websites are certainly works in progress - unless you're looking at those ones (often well-intended) that remain like historic relics, but often still offering us a relevant message. Do you know why that process, used so much by organisations, gets bogged down and (usually) goes nowhere with no end in sight? It's this:

Because the human brain has evolved to concentrate on the Ws and Ts first

(and there's no end to Ws and Ts).

If you want something to happen, you have to work on the positives - the Strengths - this is the philosophy of Appreciative Inquiry (AI). And it works!

Jackie Stavros, PhD created another approach, the AI approach:

SOAR

Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations and Results

Strengths: what do we do well and love doing well?

Opportunities: where can we take this with our Strengths?

Aspirations: what is our preferred future, where do we want to be?

Results: how will we know when we get there? What will have changed?

Notice the link to Mega Planning - our preferred future in not far from our Vision of the Future.
In the end, we go where we want to go - and enjoy the route!

PS: Oh, and if you're still worried about the Ws and Ts - you'll be amazed at how they get taken care of. They don't take as much energy as you thought.

PPS: Just one more thing - following on the trail of David Cooperrider (co-originator of AI) she's coming to Australia in July - Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. This is a reminder to watch out for the ISP you choose. I only wanted to transfer this domain to a more convenient ISP, and then I discovered that the old one stated clearly and in plain view on its website that it does not offer customer support for transferring out! Transferring out is a crime, do you understand! Don't do it, we won't help you! And I did need help.

Things were busy, I didn't get the tech help I needed in time, everyone was busy with development of all the new features on 360 Facilitated® profiles that we have been generating this year. The domain expired... Oh dear!

At last we have everything hosted with GoDaddy. It makes things easier - and GoDaddy has the best customer support I've come across. And they DO help you transfer out - if you should be silly enough to want to leave! This note is by way of thanks.

By the way, we will have our new website up soon. I know, I've made that claim before - just you wait - soon, I said!

Care to...

Care 2 look?

Ever noticed the increasing number of websites with emails that dedicate themselves to real issues otherwise neglected? Well, All our questionnaires are customisable but people who have worked with the Leader/Manager Model usually love it as is. Mind you, sometimes you have to make changes to meet org defined competencies and local language (which can mean technical or geographical) and that's fine. We are happy to advise on the changes and ensure you have a good questionnaire at the end of the day. It doesn't cost any more.

The writer suggested that it was better to select from a group of questions. That sounds nice and easy but... Are you sure you selected the ones that will cover all the issues for all the teams and managers in your organisation? That's the reason we (and our clients) love the holistic Leader/Manager Model and it's neat structure, easily understood.

But we're flexible!

And thanks, anon, for the question.

Cooperrider fills up

Under pressure I caved in, gave way and joined Twitter (as DrRons). Well, it was a chance to mention Cooperrider. So I sent off all these twits about him - sorry, tweets. His visit (first to Australia) could well go down as a historic event: the date when Australians started to understand how great we are, how much greater we can all be, leaving behind a lot of pessimism, hopelessness and argument over trivialities, and how we can grow on the positive route together.

If that sounds exaggerated, please understand that I don't do exaggeration. And this for an influenza that turns out to be weaker than the seasonal 'flu! What can the government do now? Destroy its dangerous and not very helpful stockpile? Unlikely.

Remember that children are now receiving over thirty vaccines by school age. One problem with mercury is that its effects may take years to show up. Many of these vaccines also contain aluminium, which is synergistic with mercury in the brain to cause impairment. There is also a link between elderly people receiving 'flu injections, and Alzheimers.

Vaccination is a huge and profitable industry. It needs very careful regulation but operates in an environment of fear where untested vaccines with toxic substances are allowed on the market.

Here's another view on staying healthy: eat food, not junk, avoid chemicals (environmental as well as pharmaceutical and other), exercise, relax, sleep, have fun, be positive... It works, and it's cheap. No, it doesn't gaurantee big profits for anyone, sorry.

If our Ideal Vision is to achieve the World for Tomorrow's Child (Mega Planning), then we are obliged to put health well ahead of profits.

[more - read this small but compelling study]

Interpreting your 360 Profile

Accurate?
Despite all the hullabaloo about how 'accurate' 360 degree profiles are, none of them are accurate - even ours! Why not? Well come on, think a minute. When you fill in a questionnaire like this, your answers will almost certainly be influenced by who you are (easy going, demanding...), what you think about the Recipient (nice guy, nasty...), what's going on (just got a pay rise, a popular person got fired...), even whether you're in a hurry or have time to ponder! 360s are not absolute scores of your abilities - even when they claim to be! They are feedback, a useful guide, often telling you a lot about the environment.

As a result, all 360s, no matter how large a number of people they have been tried on, have a high SD (Standard Deviation). But even though they are not an accurate 'measure of a manager' (perish the thought!), they still are quite useful.

What to look at
In general, with a rating scale it's best to prioritise the weakest (worst) ratings you are given as the areas for development. Also be sure to note the best ratings as your perceived strengths. The actual numerical score is not so important.

It's also very useful to compare the ratings you get from different groups of Respondents - do you get along better with your manager? Or do they know things that the staff don't? If your perceptions differ a lot from others (there are gaps appearing), what would cause that? Sometimes you may be worrying needlessly about issues, other times you may not be aware of them. As with the scores, the gaps will be dependent on the people and the situation, and each profile is individual in that respect.

While your profile many suggest issues that require attention, change can come from the team as well as from you, the manager. It is always a matter of perception, issues sometimes require change, sometimes it's PR (communication) that's lacking!

This advice is pretty much the same for any scale. The great value of Leaderskill's 360 Facilitated® scale is that is that you are not being judged, only being asked to do more or less - and that makes the feedback a lot easier to receive, and much more useful to act on.

Appreciation is what we want!

"The deepest principle of human nature is to be appreciated."
William James, Psychologist and Philosopher

Late 19th to early 20th century "father of psychology" William James laid the foundations for understanding the workings of the human mind. His quote about appreciation is perhaps one of the most significant things we have ever learned about humanity - perhaps about the animal world in general (and some people would like to take it beyond that!).

Try the experiment (if you haven't already). Help those around you to be at their best by telling them what you appreciate - not what you don't! You will soon discover that they already know or will quickly understand what you don't like! (And if they don't, well, there is still the option to tell them!).

If you want to take this further still and use it in a professional sense, then try the AtMyBest questionnaire, a development of 360 Facilitated™. We are keen to promote this approach to people development and offer it at a very low fee for the benefit of all.

See more quotes from William James (1842 - 1910), such as:

A great many people think they are thinking when they are really rearranging their prejudices. William James

The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.

William James

The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.

William James

Want more? Take a look at The Quotations Page

Instead of going out of date, James comes into fashion. It took generations to get back to Positive Psychology and Appreciative Inquiry (AI).

Building Green Opportunities

Now that the number of building approvals has picked up again, maybe we could start to think about what we build?!? Staff members (managers or trainees - often young ) give ideas and effort in the pursuit of an individual project that has real payoffs for the organization. Or they carry out action plans based on feedback from others.

The organization gives opportunity, encouragement and resources to make it happen. The results are: professional development and experience for the staff members; development in terms of improved performance and output, and a more skilled workforce for the organization. Bob Dick offers this definition of the broad field of action/research/experiential learning:

action --> review --> planning --> action

When the organization provides the opportunity, 360 Facilitated® will do precisely this. Managers learn by getting an accurate understanding of how their behaviour is affecting their team and what they can change. Teams learn by getting a better understanding of their manager and what responsibilities they can take on. Together they plan better ways to get the job done. While development for all parties is a major part of the process, the context for the whole exercise is task improvement. How can you be more cost effective than that? While Action Learning has often been reserved for the young, 360 Facilitated® makes it available to all. Leaderskill’s motto has always been:

“Let your people contribute”.

Yes, they would like to, why not lend them your ear?
(to be continued…)

360 in development – Part 2: Managing by Numbers

No one has demonstrated that putting numbers on managers is a reliable way to improve performance – any more than grades can be relied on to bring out the best in students. What does work, however, is feedback. Put managers in touch with the reality of what is going on and they almost always improve – which is what the numbers were supposed to do, but don’t. Why not? Because numbers don’t represent the complexity of the real world sufficiently well and because managers will do their best to fiddle numbers, but will usually accept reality – even if with some initial confusion and denial.

All right, I recant a little: sometimes in a really open environment managers handle the numbers well but conditions aren't always as good as some imagine – and not for all the managers. And there still remains the problem of: "This is the rating I got – now what do I do?"

The 360 Facilitated® approach brings a manager back to their team to face the reality of its concerns – perhaps the ultimate way to bring about change. But we shouldn’t expect that change always must always come from the manager - anymore than the old downward appraisal always assumes that changes much come from the staff! There will usually be change in the team, as well as the manager, and often in the organisation and its procedures and policies – the environment in which managers and teams must operate.

With the aim of creating an atmosphere of openness and dialogue between team and manager, the 360 Facilitated® approach keeps the profile confidential to the manager. The manager is committed to talking about it with the team, but at least the profile itself is theirs.

The 360 Facilitated® process succeeds in bringing real change and improvement quite independently of there being any manager appraisal process or rating systems. If you want to link the process to appraisal, you can’t use the manager’s profile. Why not? Simply because the profile is a product of team and manager in the context of the organization at a point in time – and the manager shouldn't be held fully accountable for all that.

Amusingly enough, in our work, we have seen extremes of this:

The easy-going team that had little change to suggest because it didn’t want to rock the boat and upset the low performing manager

The demanding team suggesting a lot of change to a high performing manager

The team suggesting a lot of change to a manager for problems over which the manager had no control – organizational issues.

The link you require to appraisal is therefore not the profile, but the output – the actions that are agreed by all parties as a result. This is what the manager signs off on, and this can and should be part of the performance management process: “You looked at the real situation with the team; together you created action plans – now what’s the result?” If performance management is truly about getting results, then this is the result we should be measuring.
To be continued…
[more]

Appreciative Inquiry and Coaching with Jo McAlpine

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a powerful force when used in coaching.
